Blue Morpho Butterfly — Framed Specimen

This Blue Morpho Butterfly (Morpho peleides), native to the rainforests of Central and South America, is one of the most recognizable insects in the world, and once you've seen it in person, it's easy to understand why. That impossible, electric blue isn't pigment at all. It's structure. Microscopic scales on the wing surface bend and scatter light, so the color you're looking at is really light itself, shifting and flashing as it catches the angle. 🦋

I set this one inside a 6" x 6" black frame with a second, ornate frame nested just behind the wings, gold detailing and black damask against that blue. It gives the piece real depth, like the butterfly was caught mid-flight rather than pinned flat against a backdrop. Small in size, but it holds a room.

This piece feels at home anywhere that could use one unexpected, beautiful thing in it: a gallery wall of curiosities, a moody entryway, a reading nook, a bathroom vanity. It stands beautifully on its own, and it holds its own just as well grouped alongside other framed specimens.

These farms raise butterflies specifically to support and repopulate wild populations, so no butterfly here was taken from the wild, and its life cycle was allowed to run its natural course.
